From 1953-63, Southern Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, formed part of the Central African Federation with neighbouring Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia) and Nyasaland (now Malawi). In 1965, to resist decolonisation, the settlers - with South African support - issued a Unilateral Declaration of Independence (UDI). This triggered a bitter civil war between the white minority government and fighters for African independence, ending only in 1980, with the granting of independence and the holding of a general election under British auspices, which was won decisively by Robert Mugabes ZANU party. Despite boasting some amazing natural sites - the Victoria Falls are without doubt one of the worlds grandest natural spectacles - as well as offering some of the best wildlife parks in Southern Africa, Zimbabwes future today is very uncertain and only time will tell how the country and its citizens will weather the political and humanitarian storm now facing them. This first book by author Mollin Mandizha, is based on the true life story of Michelle Sachu, who was born in 1948 and raised in the great land of Zimbabwe, known as Rhodesia at that time. The author, whose own life experiences closely relate to those of her subject, tells the story of how lifes many vicissitudes, including the loss of close family members, impacted on and influenced the direction Michelle Sachus life would take. ![]() Mollin Mandizha |
